Flinders Echocardiography Fellowship

This department is a private-public venture which means a bigger and more varied caseload to help educate you.

Echocardiography

The Flinders echo fellowship is an opportunity for cardiology trainees to develop their skills in all aspects of echocardiography. This includes advanced imaging techniques such as 3D and strain imaging as well as being directly involved in Interventional TOE for structural interventions including percutaneous valve implantation/repair to address mitral and aortic  valve  disease, left atrial appendage occluder implantation, septal closures and alcohol septal ablations.

There are daily transoesophageal and stress echo lists as well as an opportunity to read TTE with highly experienced and knowledgeable imaging consultants.

The Echocardiography Laboratory is fully digitilised, has state-of-the-art equipment and conducts over 15000 echocardiographic studies annually including pediatric and neonatal  echo , complex congential heart disease  and those  with advanced heart failure .


The successful applicant would be involved in clinical echocardiography, participation and presentation in echo and MDT meetings, and  research/audit activities. Flinders Echo Lab has a strong focus on education and research with a long publication track record.

The echocardiography fellowship at Flinders has been one of the career defining moments in my training towards becoming an imaging cardiologist. On top of being involved in an impressive number of stress echocardiography and transoeseophageal studies during my 12-month stint, I also had the opportunity to be part of the structural team, performing peri-procedural transoeseophageal studies in the cath lab on a weekly basis. The experience gained has been invaluable, and definitely served as a solid foundation to build on when starting out as an imaging consultant. Flinders is a high-volume centre offering a very strong clinical fellowship with a structural flavour, whilst surprisingly still manages to maintain a genuinely enjoyable, welcoming and supportive working environment - a rare combination not easily found when looking for a fellowship experience.

 Fellow at Flinders Medical Centre 2018-2019
I have had the honour and pleasure of being the echocardiography fellow at Flinders Medical Centre for a year. This year was the perfect sequel to my core cardiology training. The cardiology team at flinders is very friendly and welcoming. I was an overseas fellow so everything was new to me at the other side of the world, nevertheless I felt comfortable at the echo lab from the start thanks to the great support of the consultants and the staff.
The echo fellow position puts you at the centre of the cardiology department, getting to deal with patients of all subdiscipline within cardiology. You get the chance to learn all you want about echocardiography, from basic transthoracic echocardiography to high-end 3D transoesophageal echocardiography (TOE). There is a good mix of stress echo (which you won’t usually get in touch with a lot during basic training), TOE at the echo lab as well as participating in structural interventions to guide procedures, along with plenty of opportunity to update and master your skills of transthoracic echocardiography (both performing and reporting). During the weekly rounds at the echo lab you learn something new every week, and you get the chance to expand your knowledge either by attending or by presenting. 
As a cardiologist, echocardiography is very often the cornerstone of your investigation. Therefore this fellowship is a good opportunity for any cardiologist in training, and even more so if you’re interested in pursuing a career in non-invasive imaging.
